Health Promotion Among Retirees The purpose of this report is to investigate the general area of life after employment for the older person. The main focus of the report is on preparation for retirement for the older person as well as the specific services that are available to older people such as lifelong learning, education and leisure. INTRODUCTION As little as 10 years ago if you asked a 25 year old if they have a plan for retirement they would probably respond with â€Å"no, retirement is for old people – I’m only 25†. The reality is that we should be planning for retirement from the first day we start work. With Ireland’s increasing strength in the workforce and our impending numbers of people retiring within the next 30 years it has become a national standard to introduce schemes for people to plan their retirement. In the past people who never even thought of retirement until the year it was upon them have had very negative effects. In order to soften the blow from being active workers with a routine, a purpose, personal connections and a strong sense of self-worth trying to fall into the category of a permanent holiday seems great at first but as time passes by the holiday feeling ends and the empty useless feeling sets in. This in turn leads to numerous personal problems such as, financial, so cial, and physical and health. (Businessworld.ie, 2015), (ncaop.ie,2014), (cso.ie,2014). In the past carers predominantly come in contact with retirees who are no longer working as they have either retired due to ill health or have retired – unprepared and unable to psychologically cope with the situation – and have failed in some way to care for themselves. To this end the carer’s role is to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team including family members of the retiree to assist them with their activities of daily living in their home or in a care home setting. Carers of people in their home have found that they have become a major support in more ways than one – guiding clients through various options in order to alleviate depression – such as information on joining groups for retired people to organising their will. Carers are now able to support and promote a more positive attitude to retirement with the help of organisations – such as The Pensions Authority, Active Retirement Ireland, Citizens Information and the Retireme nt Planning Council and Age Action Ireland to name but a few. Irish people can now be completely prepared for retirement from the day they start work. These organisations have opened a whole new world of opportunities for retired people giving them access to copious amounts of information that will service their needs such as Age Action Ireland who will meet individuals and groups who wish to continue their education through the Lifelong Learning Programme in Colleges and Universities and the local Active Retirement Groups who hold regular meetings for members so they can socially interact and support each other through various activities which include sporting activities, outings, foreign travel and educational courses and interaction programmes which are run in conjunction with local youth groups and schools. These organisations have helped to remove the age old stigma attached to retirement and converted it to be now seen as life experienced people helping future generations; whi ch in turn allows young people to be mentored by retirees and they generally no longer see them as old – removing the age barrier. (ncaop.ie,2014), The Health Service Executive provides many supports for older people such as Primary Care, Social Workers and Home Care. Other non-governmental bodies also provide health promotion for older people ie, local leisure centres, G.A.A, ICA, Macra Na Feirme and Charity and Voluntary bodies. The Primary Care team provide many services for older people from health screening to occupational therapy and chiropody both in a client’s home and at local health care centres. Older people are encouraged – by family members, carers and medical staff to attend the centres as they not only provide basic healthcare facilities and counselling but also a point of support and encouragement for those who may be fearful of seeking further medical attention or may not realise that they need assistance with their activities of daily living. There are also many therapeutic interventions such as cognitive behaviour therapy which has proven to help alleviate depression and anxiety in older people which in turn enables retirees to better cope with their current situation. Pre-retirement courses are also an excellent way for people to be prepared for their retirement through their courses people have all the necessary available tools and information to retire with very little stress and have connections made with groups and associations that can enhance their quality of life after employment. (Beck and Beck, 2011) The change in the make-up of the Irish population has had an immense impact on our views of retirement and how older adults are treated. Various other cultures hold their elders in the highest regard and are rewarded for a lifetime of work – their families take over caring for them and they continue their retirement in comfort knowing that all their needs are completely taken care of. It is the influence of cultures such as these that Ireland has now began to adapt its views towards retirement and older adults enabling people to have a more positive feeling towards retirement rather than fear of loneliness and desperation. (Aranda and Knight, 1997) Some people retire before the national age for retirement of 65 not only due to illness but because they may feel they are financially stable enough to give up work – or reduce their hours of work through a phased retirement scheme with their current employer. These people still want to be active members of their family and community and as such families should be encouraged to help them with their decisions and help to keep them from becoming depressed through allowing them to help with their lives – ie child-minding, arranging family outings and holidays, giving advice to them on financial and other dilemmas – this will help to keep a retirees sense of self worth which will prevent illness and depression. For people who have retired as they are over the age limit – families can help support them in their new lives, visiting them often, encouraging them to join groups and associations and if they are not able to travel to the group meetings or outings etc , organise travel for them ensuring they are able to attend the meetings etc. If they are a member of an association, families should attend any shows or activities that they are involved in and express an interest in what they are doing. Younger family members should also be encouraged to accompany them on outings and also help them with chores around the house and do odd jobs for them. This helps with feelings of depression and loneliness as older adults will chat away to younger people telling them stories and advising them on various aspects of their lives. CONCLUSION Before starting this assignment I did not consider that I will be retiring one day and did not realise the effects it can have on my life both psychologically and physically. Through the course of my research I have found that many people who have not been prepared for retirement have a lower mortality rate that people who have a fully operational retirement plan. I am going to make sure I am fully prepared for retirement and during my interviews with members of the various local groups around Mountmellick and Portlaoise I have a good understanding of the groups I would like to join and currently become active in with. There is a wide variety of information available to people who wish to prepare for retirement and who are currently retired and I now feel as a carer I will be able to help my clients with their needs and have a good understanding of the processes involved in post-employment life to be able to support them with their needs and wishes. Movie crash
The film that had an impact on me was the movie Crash. This Oscar-winning movie written and directed by Paul Haggis showed so many lessons about life that are important. The movie demonstrated the need for empathy in this world. No matter what color or sex or size, people need to show more empathy to one another.  But this movie is also about the anger and frustration that we carry around with us everyday as well. Living in the modern day world is tough, but we need to find better ways to relate to each other. As Robert Jensen says, â€Å"We all carry around racial/ethnic baggage that’s packed with unfair stereotypes, long-stewing grievances, raw anger and crazy fears. Even when we think we have made progress, we find ourselves caught in frustratingly complex racial webs from which we can’t seem to get untangled†(Jensen). No matter where we are from around the world, the point remains that we need to find better ways to get along. Not just with those from other places and backgrounds but with those next to us who deserve better.  This idea of â€Å"It ´s the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We ´re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.†means that we need more relating and touch and understanding from the people around us. This idea of being able to relate to each other and get along is shown over and over again in this movie One example of the theme of getting along are the characters of Rick and Jean (Brendan Fraser and Sandra Bullock), a rich white couple. Rick is a DA who tries to remain unprejudiced, but the viewer feels like he is all about image so he can be re-elected. Nothing â€Å"real†seems to come from him, and the viewer suspects that he is having an affair with his white co-worker. Jean, on the other hand, is all real. She is increidibly prejudiced against the Hispanic locksmith who comes to the house. She very clearly tells her husband exactly what she thinks. â€Å"I would like the locks changed again in the morning. And you know                            what, you might mention that next time we'd appreciate it if they didn't                                   send a gang member†¦Ã¢â‚¬ She is a mean person, and she has this one memorable quote. She is talking with a so-called friend on the phone and she begins to explain the way she feels, â€Å" I am angry all the time†¦ and I don't know why†(Crash). The viewer wonders how many others feel this way. Jean has supposedly everyone that anyone would want. She has lots of money and a rich and important husband. She can do anetying she wants, but she has nobody in her life. If a woman like this is angry all the time, what can that say for the rest of us? She berates and chastises everyone due to her own unhappiness, and I believe that may just be the general state of the world. And at one point, she tells her maid that she is indeed her best friend. This is the maid who has taken her to the hospital after she has fallen down the stairs; her friends were too busy.  We need to find ways to connect with each other and make our lieves more fulfilling, so that we can have relationships with other people. That is the lesson that Jean teaches in the film. the old adage that money cannot buy happiness is shown again. Meaningful people in our lives bring happiness. Another character who displayed the importance of relationships, and was the opposite of Jean’s character was the Latino locksmith Daniel (Michael Pena). By first glance this man did not have half of what Jean’s character did. He was just a working-class guy trying to make a living. However, when we catch a glimpse of him at home with his family, our take is altogether different. The viewer sees him under the covers with his daughter telling her a sotyr about the invisible cloak and being a dad and a family man. His story is plauful and fun, not just matter of fact. â€Å"She had these little stubby wings, like she could've glued them on, you know, like I'm gonna believe she's a fairy. So she said, â€Å"I'll prove it.†So she reaches into her backpack and pulls out this invisible cloak and she ties it around my neck. And she tells me that it's impenetrable. You know  what impenetrable means? It means nothing can go through it. No bullets, nothing. She told me that if I wore it, nothing would hurt me. And I did. And my whole life, I never got shot, stabbed, nothing. I mean, how weird  is that?†(Crash). He enjoys his time with his daughter, like tucking her in at night. It seems that he is good at his job, but he works to live rather than lives to work. he lloves his wife and his daughter, and the viewer cringes at the idea of something horrible happening in this family. The scene where Daniel’s daughter almost gets shot is one of the most tense of the film. This man, while he does not have money or status, shows the viewer what life is all about. he forms meaningful connections in life, and these are what sustain him. And there is another character who seems to be in the middle, between Jean and Daniel in his ability or lack of ability to form relationships. This is officer Ryan. While he is a racist cop and does some terrible things in this movie, he is also a human being as evidenced by the scenes with his father. Because of his powerlessness at home, he is able to commit horrible atrocities at work and yet, turn around and do something entirely redeeming. His sense of powerlessness is because his father may have cancer, but their HMO prevents them from using a different doctor. His father is having prostate trouble, and the viewer sees the two of them together at night in the bathroom. The humiliation in these scenes is overwhelming, and the love between father and son is clearly shown. But Officer Ryan takes all that out on those around him. He tries to appeal to the caseworker Shaniqua, but he still insults her by lashing out about affirmative action. In the end, she cannot form a connection with him, and she honestly anwers his pleas with, â€Å"Your father sounds like a good man. And if he'd come in here today I probably would have approved his request. But he didn't come in, you did. And for his sake, that's a real shame.†We can’t really blame Shaniqua for not wanting to help him, but the viewer wishes that she would. Again and again we are shown what happens when we lack compassion and empathy for others and do not form relationships. The title itself and the opening quote implies that we are too busy with our own lives to get to know others, but that many of our preconceived notions or prejudices would be gone if only we would take the time. This applies for people from all walks of life. If rich people never do things where they come into contact with different types of people, the preconceived notions will continue to exist. The other lesson here is that everyone has a story and a reason for acting the way they do. If human beings could just take the time to learn about toehrs, we could at least begin to understand why they act the way they do. Crash does a phenomenal job of showing us these things without preaching. Oedipus the Everything but King
No Name World Literature 1 Character Analysis â€Å"Oedipus the King††¦ Hunter, Plowman, and Sailor-Helmsman Throughout the play â€Å"Oedipus Rex†, the main character Oedipus has a number of different character traits throughout the play. His out-look on the stories situation evolves as he begins to learn the truth about who he really is. Oedipus takes on the characteristics of a hunter as well as becoming the hunted; he is a sower yet also the seed, and a sailor-helmsman of the city. Each of these images has their own significance.Oedipus first starts out as the hunter once he marries the queen of Thebes. Once betrothed, Oedipus is told that, Laius, the late king of Thebes was murdered by a robber. Oedipus says that he will exile or execute Laius’ killer once he is found. The irony to his statement is that he will have to catch and exile himself because in actuality he is the man who killed Laius. Oedipus then goes from being the hunter to the hunted, not knowing the man he is looking for is actually him himself.He proceeds to tell his men to â€Å"Hunt him down with all your strength†but in essence he’s telling his men to hunt him which makes him the hunted. Oedipus asks Tiresias to speak on behalf of what he knows and when he does not this upsets him. Oedipus begins to mock Tiresias about the fact that he cannot â€Å"see†and in return Tiresias says the same thing to Oedipus. Tiresias is blind but he is the one who sees Oedipus’ future clearly and Oedipus is not and can’t see what his future holds at all.In mocking Tiresias, Oedipus reaps the consequences of his actions because he later takes his own sight. Oedipus is also considered a sower because he married and had children; however he is his mother’s seed and ironically he married and reproduced with his mother. By definition plowman prepare the fields with seeds and expect plants to be produced. Oedipus and widowed Queen Jocasta marr y, are intimate and reproduce children.The imagery is the same for Jocasta and her first husband King Laius as that for her second husband, Oedipus: like father, like son as it turns out. The Sailor-helmsman is in essence is the person who guides a ship. Oedipus being king of Thebes is supposed to steer the people out of harm’s way. Oedipus thought that he was doing the right thing by leaving the place he thought was home when he was told he would kill his father and marry his mother; only the thing was the parents he knew of in Corinth were not his actual parents.After Oedipus leaves Corinth, because of all that he has done he has brought a plague amongst his city, the city of Thebes. â€Å"The citizens are passengers of the ship watching as their captain and his vessel fall to pieces†. All of these images were ironically tied into showing the positives and negatives that contributed to Oedipus’ demise. However, this was not all Oedipus’ fault because so mewhere down the family line Oedipus’ family was cursed and he had nothing to do with it, he was just the one who would complete the curse which leads to his undoing.

Sociology Is The Systematic Study Of Human Society
Sociology is defined in many different ways by many different people; more commonly, â€Å"sociology is the systematic study of human society†(Macionis). Human society is made up of different categories or patterns in subjects such as race, gender, income, etc. More than half the time, people go on about their lives without realizing any of this. Sociology is like a sub-conscience; it guides us and teaches us about the world we live in and the choices we make, even without directly thinking about it. Not only does it provide insight to the choices we do make, but also choices we do not make. We live in a world where sociology is everywhere and in everything we experience, with certain differences between cultures, norms, and values. It allows us to understand how larger social forces influence us personally. We learn all of this, starting with a sociological perspective. A sociological perspective is â€Å"seeing the general in the particular†and â€Å"seeing the s trange in the familiar†(Macionis). Supporting the fact that everyone is their own individual self, and unique at that, there are certain categories in which people fit into, shaping our lives. Through social perception, culture, media, education, family, laws, and communities, society is influencing us. Our lives are what they are whether you decide to be in a certain category or not.
